THE HISTORY OF THE INVENTION OF THE WASHING MACHINE: 5 UNIQUE FACTS
Increasingly, devices are becoming automated, and the usual household duties are performed for a person by special devices. This also applies to washing machines . Now they are in every monastery, people have felt the advantages and features of the devices. Indeed, such devices save time and effort.
Previously, you had to spend half a day on washing things, and sometimes even a whole one. And yet, after a while, everything was dirty again. Doing it manually has always been difficult. Now it is much easier: put the laundry, press a special button and forget. Using devices familiar to humans, you need to know about their invention.
When the first washing machine appeared
The first washer was a board with a ribbed surface that removed even stubborn and tough stains. Such machines were used for a long time and made work easier.
For the first time, a device for washing clothes was introduced in 1797 by Nathaniel Briggs. Such “ household appliances ” at that time looked like a wooden box with a frame. The latter was set in motion by force. Already in the 18th century, it was possible to somewhat facilitate and speed up the process of washing clothes. After a washing machine of this kind appeared, developments and inventions did not stop.
Strong barrels were also created. Inside such a structure, a cross was rotated, which was started by a steam engine. Due to this, the hostesses effectively dealt with pollution.
They tried to mechanize this type of household chores in different countries. It was only at the beginning of the 19th and 20th centuries that the first results were achieved. The history of the creation of this technique is interesting in that the principle of operation of the devices has not changed over the years.
The prototype of a drum washing machine
In 1851, a washing machine was made, which became the prototype of future models. This development belongs to James King. A US resident created a device that included a drum with a spinning function. The device had a manual pull and simplified household chores for housewives.
The washing machine was made in the form of a tub with a cylinder with holes. The latter was fixed on the central rod and brought into rotation. The peculiarity of the installation was as follows:
- linen was placed inside such a structure;
- then soap solution was poured;
- the washing process was started using a special drive, which was rotated by hand.
But the device was bulky and required considerable physical effort. This device became the prototype of a drum washing machine .
In 1861, rollers were created for appliances that dried clothes, which also simplified the process. Such devices were attached to the body. In subsequent years, inventions continued, and wherever the washing machine was not invented, but most of the advances were not viable. After 14 years, the number of patent applications exceeded two thousand.
Mass production
The development of this category of devices began with William Blackstone. The period fell to 1874. A scientist from America has also created a device with a manual pull. He came up with a washing machine as a gift for his wife for a holiday. After a while, the American launched the equipment for conveyor production, selling each variation for 2.5 dollars. And now the plant founded by the inventor is functioning.
In 1900, the Miele & Cie company in Germany launched the production of models that have already become full-fledged devices. The basis was a converted churn. This happened thanks to Karl Mila. Such devices were in demand among the population in Europe. At that time, other enterprises were engaged in the development of washing machines. Also, a feature of these models was the simultaneous interaction of engineers and designers.
